Be Good to Yourself Therapy

Why is it that we sometimes feel guilty when we do things for ourselves? This is an absolute necessity in order to fulfill all of the roles we have in life. We will be a better mother, wife, co-worker, and friend if we learn to be good to ourselves. So what does this entail? 

 

Banish Negative Thoughts & Words

We so often think unkind thoughts to ourselves or even say mean things to ourselves outloud. I am usually pretty good about not doing that. However, recently my doctor put me on a medication that the side effect is weight gain. I gained 22lbs! That is significant and, needless to say, I am not happy about that. On Christmas we were taking pictures and by inner critic creeped out. Oh, delete that...my arms look like a sumo wrestler! After a few comments like that, my daughter said, "Mama, you would never say that to someone else, why would you said it to yourself?" And she was right. If your head is filled with negative comments to yourself that you would never say to someone else, it's a red flag. So banish your inner critic and when a thought comes replace it with a compliment to yourself.

 

Resist Comparing Yourself 

 

Galatians 6:4-5 says, "Each of you must examine your own actions. Then you can be proud of your own accomplishments without comparing yourself to others." Comparing yourself to others is futile. Be careful of doing this. You will never measure up to someone else because you are not suppose to! Be your own kind of beautiful! You are special. You are unique and God loves you just the way you are!

 

Run Away for a Bit

 

Carve out 20 minutes and do something to relax. Read, listen to music for a bit, take a walk, Go to Barnes and Noble or Starbucks, take a bubble bath, or go to the thrift store. Or sit in a comfortable chair, pray and get silent so you can hear from God.

 

Believe God

 

God loves you beyond measure! He is concerned about you taking care of yourself. Don't feeling guilty, feel happy and blessed. God wants us to honor our well being and honor our bodies because our bodies is a temple He lives in. So by honoring your well being, you are honoring God!
