One Thing Angry People Lack

Do you ever tire of all the anger in the world? Racism, Haters, Road Rage, Political Bashing, Senseless Crimes, and Mean People have become a part of the fabric of our lives. It's all very sinister! I am sure it breaks God's heart when He looks down at it all! However, there's another kind of anger that is much more subtle. The anger that grows a root of bitterness in our hearts and we might not even realize it's happening to us. It's human nature to get angry. But letting that anger escalate and what we do with that anger is key. ANGER is one letter short of DANGER. Anger can be a dangerous thing! The Bible tells us to be slow to anger. That is for a reason. Because once it escalates it's hard to reconcile.

My only sister, Kathy, and I have lived in different states for more than 30 years. It's hard to be close when that is the situation. This week we had a huge argument. I can't remember ever arguing with her except as children. I gave her some constructive feedback about something I felt very strongly about. It turn into a huge battle of words going back to everything she has been upset about in her life. The problem was I responded to her in anger and it failed miserably. I am very sorry I responded in that manner. I had only one point and it turned into a train wreck. I love her dearly, but my approach was wrong. Now she has cut me off completely and is not speaking to me. We need to ALWAYS take a time break and NEVER approach someone in anger. It most always fails. And it did. It's not worth losing a relationship. I do not know how to repair it. All I can do is pray. If you think about it, pray for me and Kathy that we will reconcile.

The reason anger is dangerous is that we are not thinking clearly. Sometimes we are angry and we don't even know why. We are tense, cranky, and frustrated. The enemy uses anger as one of his very successful tools in dividing family and dividing friends. Here is the one of the things angry people lack: GRATITUDE. People dwell on how life has let them down and people have let them down. Maybe you dwell on how God has let you down. Colossians 3:15 says, "Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful." What we dwell on drives EVERYTHING in our lives! The more you dwell on miserable things, the more miserable you become. Anger and Gratefulness cannot dwell in the same mind. Fact. Holding a grudge is like drinking poison and waiting for the other person to die. God is the one who can deliver us from an angry heart and he will do it if we ask.

The key to resisting anger is to renew your mind. We must do this daily, sometimes hourly! Colossians 3:2 tells us, "Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth." Remember, if we truly are Christians and if we truly love God, we must have an eternal mindset. We must respond in love, even in difficult situations. It is one of the 10 Commandments. The way to do this is to walk in close fellowship with our Heavenly Father. He is the one who helps us be the kind of person we are meant to be. Gratefulness is defined as: "feeling and showing appreciation." I pray that we all stop, breath, take a time break, and think before we respond in anger. Instead CHOOSE Gratefulness. Make a list. Write it down on paper. Make it a prayer. It's the season and month to be thankful. Truth is... that should be an all year, everyday thing. I hope you make that choice.
