What's Your Fear Factor?

I have dealt with Depression and Anxiety most of my life. With that diagnosis comes the feeling of fear on a semi-regular basis. There are mornings I actually wake up with a heart full of fearfulness and sometimes I don’t even know why. There are so many types of fear. Today we will focus on just three.

Fear of Something Physical

Some people are afraid of snakes, heights, driving at night or even clowns! One of my deepest fears is the fear of water. I can’t get in the water at the beach, boats, and I am afraid of drowning because I can’t swim. We can’t control what physical things we are afraid of. The best thing to do is to avoid these things to avoid the anxiety. Imagine how I felt on our vacation last week. Robbie, Amanda, and Garrett were diving and taking fishing trips and I could not even think of doing those things. I did have fun in different ways and we had the afternoon and evenings together. But being deathly afraid of water, I just had to avoid those activities.

Fear of Something Bad Happening

This is common because we worry incessantly sometimes about bad things happening. We live in a world where evil has a prominent place in our society. It is difficult not to be fearful. I detest the news. I watch a little bit on The Today Show and that’s it. If you are a Christ follower, there is good news! We can have supernatural peace in the midst of turmoil. We read in John 14:27, "Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid."

Fear That We Are Not Good Enough.

This fear is crippling. Because the enemy tells us lies on a regular basis. As a Christian, I mess up all the time. I ask God to forgive me and re-direct me. An then what I should do is accept God’s grace and forgiveness. But oftentimes, I replay over and over in my mind what I wish I didn’t do. This is heartbreaking to our souls. You can’t always trust your feelings but you can trust the truth. The truth is God knows we will do bad things. That’s why His grace and mercy are amazing gifts. Don’t listen to the enemy. Listen to God and His Word.

Embrace Faith Over Fear

The Bible says Do Not Fear over 300 times. God knew we would struggle with fear and He doesn’t want us to carry that burden. Faith is defined, “Complete trust or confidence.” We can have complete trust and confidence that God is with us working to fulfill His work in us. All you need is faith the size of a mustard seed as the Bible tells us. Also worship, christian music and reading God’s Word dispels the fear in our heart. Joshua 1:9 tells us, "Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.” You see LOVE cancels FEAR. God’s love is so great for us that He will give us the ability to choose Faith Over Fear!

"When I am afraid, I put my trust in you. In God, whose word I praise — in God I trust and am not afraid."

~ Psalm 56:3-4
